Biomass and Heating Oil Comparative Study for a Grade 2 listed building. The building was fully refurbished to maximise thermal performance.

Technologies

Condensing Oil Boiler
Wood Chip & Wood Pellet Biomass Boiler

Study Outcomes*

The property comprises of accommodation for thirty elderly residents each occupying a room with en-suite facilities. A new heating system will replace the existing inefficient oil heating system and it will be either a condensing oil fired boiler or a biomass boiler using either wood chip fuel or wood pellets.

The oil fired boiler was compared with a biomass boiler. The wood chip boiler provides the lowest annual operating costs of around £10,000 per year. The heating oil option costs around £13,000 per year, and the wood pellet option is the most expensive costing around £19,000 per year.

Our client chose to install the wood chip biomass boiler using a Carbon Trust interest free loan.

If you are interested in upgrading your heating system, or considering renewable energy technologies installation and need a specialist advice, contact our office on 01953 798112.
